History of the Golden Retriever

Golden retrievers were bred in Scotland by Lord Tweedmouth, who wanted a breed of dog that would excel at hunting water fowl.  He cross bred an Irish Setter, a Tweed Water Spaniel and a Bloodhound, and eventually came out with a golden-colored dog that earned the name golden retriever in 1920.  The breed was first shown in Great Britain and didn’t appear in the United States until the early 1920s.

The golden retriever is a very popular breed today because of its gentle, loving, and kind nature. They are extremely loyal to their masters, and yet they respond well to outsiders also. They train well and easily, and once they comprehend what their master desires, they will surprise you with their knowledge and quick response to you.

Golden retrievers have also been trained to be “seeing eye” dogs, and they perform exceptionally well in this capacity, having had fewer of this breed rejected from the program.  They respond to more than 240 commands, and are a very athletic, well-balanced breed.  The American breed is lankier than the British breed, standing about 22 to 24 inches high.

The retriever is not a good guard dog, because they are friendly to everyone and don’t seem to know the difference between a stranger and a friend.  Like their name  retriever implies, they love to retrieve things like balls, frisbees, sticks and whatever else they can find.

If you are looking for a mild-mannered, loving, playful dog, who is easy to train and excels in obedience, why not try a Golden Retriever.
