Making Dog Food at Home

Dogs, like any other animal, have their own food needs and likes.  When dogs were wild they lived on any other animal they could prey on, but some plants were also eaten.

Before you begin making your own dog food it is best to do a study of the breed of dog you own and the nutritional needs they require for good health.  Slowly introduce a different diet so as not to upset the dog's digestive system.

Some foods are off limits for dogs such as mushrooms, garlic, chocolate, uncooked bones, onions, avacados, grapes, raisins, macadamia nuts, and spicy or greasy foods.  Many of these may even kill your pet.

Most homemade dog food recipes contain cooked meat, fish or poultry, eggs, oatmeal, corn meal, different vegetables such as green beans, carrots, mixed vegetables, cooked brown rice and some dairy products. Most dogs require some raw meats.  You may make your own recipes as you learn what your dog likes and enjoys most.  Always offer food at room temperature.

Keep extra food in the refrigerator in a covered container but not for more than 3 days.  You may add a dog multivitamin/mineral supplement.

Each dog will have a different amount of food consumption according to the body size and the amount of activity the dog performs. Many of the commercial dog foods will cut a pet's life short by years because of the extra additives that they contain.

Making homemade dog food became more popular after March 21, 2007 when many pets began dying from contaminated commercial dog foods. Always consult a veterinarian for the nutritional needs of your breed of dog, if necessary, to keep your animal healthy.
