Boot Camp for Overweight Dogs

You may not know that dogs have much of the same health problems as humans. Obese dogs, like humans, are at higher risk of experiencing many other health problems, such as high blood sugar, diabetes, arthritis, and hip dysplasia. Extra weight can put wear and tear on your pet’s joints and cause them to develop arthritis. If you suspect obesity in your pet, it is very important that you ask your veterinarian to make sure that your dog is, in fact, “overweight." Once establishing that your dog is obese, you can take the next step towards helping your dog become healthier.

Counting calories is the best way to achieve a healthier new you and the same holds true for your dog. A diet that is well planned out by your vet is much more effective than any “quick fix” home-remedy. Your dog’s intake of food should be based on their activity level. The process of losing the extra weight should have a steady pace, so that your dog’s body can be taught how to burn fat and keep it off. Your veterinarian, as well as many dog food companies, can help teach you a good diet plan. Most importantly, it is your job to monitor what is being fed to your dog. Find foods high in fiber and low in fat and give them three smaller portioned feedings a day. The most obvious way to help a dog lose weight is to exercise the dog daily. Be sure to take your dog on at least two 15-minute walks a day.

Accomplishing the goal weight of your dog and maintaining their ideal weight can be difficult. Make sure to stick to the new lifestyle and not fall back into poor dietary habits. Doing this will improve the health of your dog and help them live a longer, healthier life.
