When it comes to obedience training, there is everything from dog boot camps to in your own home training available. Selecting what fits your lifestyle as well as the proper training methods for the age and breed of dog you are training is very important. Many specialty classes are available by breed and age. In addition, there are general community education classes which teach you how to train your dog.
One thing to remember is to bond with your dog or puppy to gain his trust and loyalty. If you are the one that is going to train your puppy, it is best to use the reward method. You want your puppy to love you, and punishing them will just make them afraid of you, or they will become complacent and ignore the discipline. You should be able to get your dog or puppy to obey verbal commands. Remember to be patient with your dog and keep the training sections short. Fifteen to twenty minutes works best. Also, do your training in a controlled environment with no distractions. If you do not feel well, or are short on patience, skip training that day as dogs are very perceptive of peoples' feelings. This can change their attitude, making the training session unproductive. Keep the training light and enthusiastic. The more fun you make the training for them, the better you will both feel about the training, and the more successful you will be.
The importance of puppy obedience training cannot be stressed enough. Obedience training and love are the two most important things you can do to set the tone for a long lasting and very rewarding relationship for you and your puppy for life.
