I never planned on owning a golden retriever. Over a decade ago, I was researching various breeds, but that was not one of them. Then, on a Friday evening in January, I walked into my house after work and three dogs greeted me (we only owned two). One I had never seen before: a six-month old reddish golden retriever.
My husband sheepishly told me that her name was Sandy and "we're only keeping her for the weekend while her owner is away." How could I say no? But when Monday morning came, I reminded my husband of his promise.
Entering our home on Monday evening, I not only found Sandy but also her food and water dishes and her leash. My husband was pleased to tell me she was ours now, and showed me the AKC registration from the original owners. (Future post about the first owners).
I still didn't want a golden retriever. My husband insisted that we take a family vote. What a setup! Here is an adorable six month old puppy and there I was staring into the eyes of our five children. Obviously, I lost the vote (overwhelmingly). And so I resigned myself to own a dog from a breed I didn't want, never wanted.
From that experience, I can warn you to watch out for golden retrievers! They are very sneaky! They worm their way into your heart and soul and you won't even know it's happening. When you do, it's too late. You're in love. I now own three goldens and have enjoyed the pleasure of two litters. I'm hooked.
