The new trend sweeping across America is feeding the family dog a raw diet. Most people feed their dog processed, dry or canned food from the supermarket. Raw diets are supposed to be more healthy for the dog. Dogs who are fed raw diets tend to have healthier skin, fresher breath and cleaner teeth along with less digestion problems, fewer allergy symptoms, decreased shedding, increased stamina, firmer but smaller stools, and a general increase of overall health. That all sounds wonderful for your dog but what does a raw diet consist of?
A raw diet is basically human food but not cooked. Here is a list of items that are considered to be part of a raw doggy diet: a variety of meats such as chicken, turkey, pork, and fish. They can also eat wild game such as deer or quail. Raw bones are a good source of vitamins for the dog plus a source of fun. Dogs also need organ items in their diet such as liver. The raw diet doesn’t just include meat. Dogs need eggs and vegetables as well.
If you are interested in starting your dog on a raw diet do your research and discuss your ideas with your veterinarian. If you choose this type of diet, make sure you are feeding your dog a well rounded meal in the right way. A raw diet may be hard on the owner because it is more time consuming than pouring food out of a bag but proponents of raw diets believe they are healthier for your beloved member of the family.
