The Poofy Poodle

Originating in France, the Poodle was initially used as a water retriever in Germany due to the breed's intelligence, devotion and obedience. This type of job created their well known hair cut, as it helped this breed of dog to move through the water more efficiently. Existing patches of hair left after the cut help to protect the dogs' vital organs and joints from cold temperatures. Loving to do tricks for treats, poodles are often found performing in circus acts.

The Standard Poodle has a height of approximately 15 inches at its shoulders. If competing, a dog shorter than this height will be considered a Miniature or Toy Poodle and will be unable to compete in the Standard category as per American Kennel Club rules. In showing, they sport what is known as the "Continental Clip," the shaving of the face, feet, part of the tail, and the upper half of the front and back legs. The hair left over gives a "pom pom" look around the ankles, end of tail, head and body. For this breed of dog, this type of haircut is the most popular. Regular grooming is a must if an owner wishes their pet to sport it.

An active and lively breed of dog, the Poodle requires daily exercise such as a walk or play session. The Poodle is a people-friendly dog and gets along well with other pets and the Standard Poodle especially enjoys children. With proper care this family friendly pet will be around for a good 10-13 years.
