Golden Retriever Behavior

A golden retriever makes an excellent pet for someone who will devote enough time and attention to the dog’s behavior. Golden retrievers adore the company of people and want to play. This breed is not for someone who will be away for long periods of time and must leave the dog alone. Goldens need consistent exercise and attention.

The golden retriever is the most popular pet for families today. They are very social and love to give and receive affection. The dogs react well to children and other pets. They will fetch a ball all day, if someone wants to entertain them. They want to be active and love the outdoors.

Originally derived from Russian circus dogs, they were bred to retrieve. For this reason, they are one of the favorite breeds for hunters. They have a natural ability and can easily be taught to retrieve game either on land or in the water. Golden retrievers love the water and are good swimmers.

Because golden retrievers are so faithful and friendly, they can be territorial and may bark at anything or anyone not in their normal setting. However, they will rarely attack a person. Their bark is generally issued as a greeting and not a warning. Since it takes little to trigger a bark, they are not considered good watch dogs or guard dogs. It’s hard to teach them to be a reliable source for danger alert.

They are naturally affectionate and want to please, so they make excellent guide dogs for the blind. The dogs are faithful and trustworthy and generally well mannered. The breed is easy to train because they are intelligent and attentive.
