Hunting With Golden Retrievers

Golden retrievers are a favorite among hunters. They have the physical characteristics to go into dense areas, and work well in the water. They are of medium size with a broad chest and muscular neck and thighs, are very agile, and can move quickly. Their size and maneuverability are suited for scrambling in and out of boats. Their outer coat is waterproof with a thick undercoat. Golden retrievers are known for their excellent noses and ability to track.

Because golden retrievers enjoy pleasing their masters and excel in obedience competitions, they can almost be fun to train for hunting. A golden retriever can learn about 240 commands, words, or phrases. The combination of intelligence and desire to please usually makes it an easy task of training for the hunt. They are bred with a natural desire to mark and deliver birds. Training them commands is up to you.

Training a dog for hunting can be problematic if a pup develops bad habits at an early age. For example, a pup can learn that playing a tug of war game is great fun, and later it will be hard to break the habit when retrieving a bird. The way he treats toys will reflect the way the retrieved bird will be treated. Don’t chase a pup with an object, or he will learn that he can get your attention by running away and think it's great fun. There are so many do’s and don’ts for a perfectly trained hunting dog, but most of it is just common sense, and choosing a natural hunter, such as a golden retriever.
