Goldendoodles

What is a Goldendoodle? It is a cross between a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Standard Poodle. Goldendoodles are referred to as hybrids. Neither the United Kennel Club nor the American Kennel Club recognizes the Goldendoodle as a purebred dog. The breed is relatively new, starting within the last 20 years. They are bred in the U.S. as well as the U.K. This breed is growing steadily in popularity.

The traits of the Goldendoodle make it a likable and attractive pet. The dog has the best traits from each breed. Golden Retrievers have wonderful dispositions but the downside is that they shed heavily. A poodle doesn’t shed, but it tends to be more temperamental. Golden Retrievers have straight hair and Poodles have curly hair. The Goldendoodle puppies start out with soft straight hair that becomes wavy as the dog grows. These dogs shed very little, which makes for a good house dog. They are also tolerable for people who have minor allergies. If the dog comes from a standard poodle, the females generally grow to weigh between 40-60 pounds, while the males reach 60-70 pounds.

Goldendoodles make wonderful pets. They are very loyal and crave the attention of their owners. Their intelligence makes them easy to train and eager to please. A Goldendoodle never meets a stranger. They are very good with children. Their demeanor is like a Golden Retriever, which is a gentle breed. They also have the retriever tendencies of their parent, along with a love of playing in the water. Health problems are less prevalent than with their parents since the gene pool is much larger. Overall, the Goldendoodle makes a wonderful family pet.
