History of Designer Dogs

When two different breeds of purebred dogs are mated, their offspring are called hybrids or “designer dogs." Most often breeds are mated with poodles in order to produce dogs that do not shed, or shed very little. This is welcomed by people with allergies or those who do not want to deal with dog hair on everything they own.

A hybrid is different from a mixed breed in that it is planned and bred to be a hybrid. However, some breeders don’t pay close attention to what they are breeding and thus produce unappealing hybrids.

A well thought out, well bred “designer dog” is becoming increasingly popular because it usually has the best traits of each breed and tends to be more vigorous.

There are so many different combinations of breeding available today; just a few are the Bogle a cross between a Boxer and a Beagle; a Bug, which is a cross between a Pug and a Boston Terrier; a Shih Pom, a cross between a Shih Tzu and a Pomeranian; and the Labradoodle, a Lab/Poodle mix.

Most owners who want to show their dogs want a purebred or a registered hybrid, although it is not necessary to have a purebred for some dog shows. The only one that requires a specific breeding line is conformation showing.

The practice of hybrid breeding is producing some really cute puppies that grow up into fine dogs. If you are interested, do your homework and be sure and check out the breeders because you will want to deal with a reputable one.
