The Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a dog used by hunters to retrieve game that is shot down. Their intelligence and versatility see them in a variety of roles including illegal drug detection, search and rescue and very good guide dogs. The golden retriever has a strong love for water and is very friendly, eager to please and a very patient dog. The golden retriever is also one of the most popular family dogs because of its patient demeanor and attentiveness.
This is why the golden retriever can make for a good family pet.

Golden Retrievers are very active and great athletes. They must have exercise or be walked on a daily basis, if not, they will become restless and anxious. This breed of dog is prone to gain weight very quickly if not exercised every day. Golden Retrievers are very heavy shedders and should be groomed at least four times a month. This breed also sheds very heavily at least twice a year; this is known as a "blow coat." It is also wise to have their ears cleaned often; if not cleaned, an infection may develop. It is important to watch for severe shedding and, if bald patches appear, this can indicate stress or sickness in golden retrievers.

The most common sickness among this breed is cancer. Almost 62% of the breed is killed by cancer, according to a 1998 health study. Golden Retrievers are also prone to eye disease and should be watched carefully. This breed's lifespan is only 10 to 12 years.
