There were four Golden Retrievers who played Buddy in the movie "Air Bud: Golden Receiver" and the Buddy movies that followed. Their names were Rush, Chase, Zak and Chance. The above movie grossed $24 million dollars after opening in 1997. There were seven sequels to the original movie each portraying the Golden Retriever as a hero in different sports. Some other Golden Retrievers who acted in television and movies are Duke, from the TV commercial for Bush's Beans, the "Homeward Bound" Golden Retriever Shadow and Brinkley from the movie "You've Got Mail." Comet was another Golden Retriever who played the family pet in the Sitcom "Full House." There was also Punky Brewsters Sitcom companion Golden Retriever Brandon.
Other movies starring Golden Retrievers are the Walt Disney movies "Fluke", released in 1995, "Napoleon" also released in 1995 and "The Trial of Old Drum", released in 2001.
The Golden Retriever has been assigned to the working class dog group by the American Kennel Club. Golden Retrieves are used for other types of work besides movies and television. They are used by hunters, thus the name retriever. Their soft mouths allow them to pick up waterfowl or other hunted animals and return the prize unscathed to their masters. They are also used as guide dogs for the blind and have been used in search and rescue operations.
Statistics from the American Kennel Club show the Golden Retriever to be the second most popular breed of dog. There are many others who have played co-stars in movies and television.
