Designer dogs are a mix of two purebreds of any species of dogs. They are sometimes bred for their desirable behavior or characteristics, but some are bred just because they look unusual. They are made to produce a certain size or style of dog, with certain distinctiveness and/or with modified behavior traits, power, strengths and other certain capabilities. Sometimes, the dogs are also bred for such traits as being hypoallergenic and shedding less.
Often, due to the size or oddness of the dog, some people will refer to them as mutts. However, this is not true -- the difference between the two is that designer dogs are carefully bred with documentation of their ancestry, and a mutt is usually of unknown origin. Mixed-breed dogs have a healthier life span, due to the fact that they often carry advantages of the breeds they are derived from. On the other hand, the purebred is bred from two of the same kind of dog, so the traits (including advantages and weaknesses) of that breed tend to be much more dominant.
The disposition of a designer dog puppy is strongly affected by its upbringing, but its mix of breeds can also have a large impact. You may not know what to expect until the dog is already developed, so it is important to be aware of the breeds being mixed. Other factors, such as the dog's size or inherited traits, can be difficult to predict as well. For this reason, if you are thinking of getting a designer dog, it is probably best to do some research beforehand to understand the result.
