For the Love of Poodles

How much do you know about Poodles? Breeders will tell you there are three sizes of Poodles recognized by dog registry organizations. They are the standard, the miniature and the toy. Within the category of the toy are the tiny toy and the teacup. Specifically, a standard poodle generally measures between 16 and 27 inches tall and is the largest in the size categories. A miniature Poodle is 11 to 15 inches tall and toy Poodles are less than 10 inches in height. The tiny toy weighs 4 to 6 pounds and the teacup Poodle is the smallest, weighing only 2 to 4 pounds when fully grown.

According to poodles.com, “poodles do not shed, and they do not normally have dry, flaky skin.” There is some evidence that, due to these factors, people who are allergic to pet dander aren’t similarly affected by Poodles and have been known to own them successfully. Poodles.net states that: “The Poodles most outstanding characteristics are its intelligence and sense of humor!” They are also very loyal companions to own. They come in many beautiful colors, including varying shades of red, apricot, brown, beige, cream, silver, blue, black and white. Some have contrasting colors, like white with red or brown ears.

It is uncertain where the breed originated. Some experts say Poodles came from France, while others state they were first bred in Russia, Iberia or Germany. The AKC frequently cites Germany as the breed’s country of origin; however, it was the French who developed the breed into the 3 sizes we know today. Poodles have been popular for many centuries throughout Europe and are featured in some ancient Roman artwork. Smart and agile, Poodles are easily trained and they make very loving pets.
