History of the Golden Retriever

Hunting was an important part of life in the early 1800s not just for food but also as a sport. As improvements in guns took place, hunters became more accurate even at long distances and many times over rough ground and water and the previous retrieving dogs were unable to do the job.

Baron Tweedmouth, of Scotland had decided to breed a more vigorous and powerful dog that was gentle and trainable. Hunters during this era wanted their dogs to be practical, good looking and a pleasure to be around. For this reason he chose to cross a larger pleasant dog, a yellow-colored Retriever with a common Tweed Water Spaniel, who was an excellent swimmer. The pairing of these two produced four pups. Pleased with the outcome these four pups became the basis of the breeding program. These dogs were inbred to create a solid bloodline.

In a short hundred years, these Retrievers became known as the Golden Retriever and was a great hunting dog. These dogs are of above average intelligence and trainable. They have a soft mouth that can carry the bounty without damaging it with their teeth. These dogs walk quietly and sit very patiently until released by command. They are able to retrieve fallen game in the water or on land as well as search out game for walking hunters

The Golden Retriever is relatively a young breed of dog. This dog came to the United States in the 1890s as a hunting dog and by 1920 they were in dog shows. Overtime this dog has become a great family companion, a hunting dog and a show dog.
