The golden retriever is one of the most recognized breed of dogs. This lovable and devoted companion has not only graced people with its presence in their homes, but has also graced the stage of the American Kennel Club as champion of breeds many times in past decades.
This active and intelligent breed has standards in order to be recognized by the AKC. The golden retriever is part of the sporting group. It is hard working and self-confident. The overall appearance of the dog is given great consideration. Males should be 23 to 24 inches in height, and 65 to 75 pounds in weight. Females should be 21 1/2 to 22 1/2 inches tall, and should weigh 55 to 65 pounds. When talking about the head of a golden, their muzzle should be "straight in profile", and their eyes should be friendly with a dark brown color. Ears should be short, the nose black or brown in color, and teeth should have a scissors bite, meaning the outer side of the lower incisors touch the inner side of the upper incisors. The body of golden retrievers should be well balanced with a tail extending outward, but never over the back or between the legs. The color of its coat can range from light golden to dark golden, but pure white and red are not acceptable. Its way of walking, or gait, should be "free, smooth, and powerful."
These are some of the most important standards that need to be met in order for a golden retriever to be recognized by the AKC. When considering buying this breed of dog to show, make sure to educate yourself on all necessary standards before putting in the investment.
