Christmas Puppies

There is nothing more enticing or cute than a squiggly, squirmy, beautiful puppy with a big red bow under the Christmas tree. There's nothing like it. And in January, the most puppies are sent to shelters because that impressive Christmas present was alive and had to be cared for. The whole thing got old fast. What happened? Emotion took over and the puppy was purchased. Deciding to own a puppy requires much thought, planning, and decisions about time and money the dog will require, not to mention love and attention and training.

I know all this because I always wanted a dalmatiion. This was many, many years ago when I was in my early twenties and just loved the breed. One Christmas I was presented with a truly handsome young male, proudly wearing his big red bow. He was gorgeous and every spot on him was perfect. My memory is not as exact as it was in years past, but I remember how thrilled I was (I have always been a dog lover). But after a few months of living alone and working full time and trying to take care of the dog, something had to give. I was involved in my work and attending graduate school. Luckily for me, a very close friend of mine was able to find a home for the growing pup with a family that had a yard and most importantly, had the time and love to give the dog.

So did I have a good reason for not keeping the dog? Maybe. Was it the right thing to do? No. And the answer in my opinion is always No. Although it may have hurt the feelings of the giver, I should have said thanks but no thanks. I should have acted in a mature manner. All I can say is I learned so much from the experience and I have bathed my dogs in love and attention.

If a friend or family member, especially a child, is begging for a puppy for Christmas, please think long and hard. A puppy is a wonderful, exciting gift no matter when it is presented. Save it for another time; there's usually too much to do during the holidays any way. Please be sure you have the time, attention, and finances to properly care for a puppy. Oh yes, and patience. When the time is right, you'll have the time of your life!
