Happy New Year to all our visitors! I enjoy the holidays and what and who comes with it,
But the end of the holidays just reminds me that it's still winter, the snow will fall and the wind will blow. The end of the holidays is like a big period at the end of the sentence, or the occasion, of holidays. Friends and sometimes family members experience different depths of depression, including me. We miss the sunshine. We wish the bills for all the holiday stuff would magically disappear. What was I thinking when I bought? Did I expect to hit the lottery on New Year's Day?
Symptoms of this post-holiday depression include lack of energy, feelings of fatigue, having no desire to go anywhere or do anything that you normally would enjoy. Clinical depression means you need to see a doctor! Typical post-holiday depression means you need a diversion and you need to feel loved and appreciated.
And who fills that bill? Dogs, of course! I turn to my dogs. I pay more attention to them because I was so busy during the holidays that they got less attention than usual. We play games in the house and we try to go out, even for just a few minutes, every day. Even dogs get bored with their environment day after day. I hug my dogs and they lick me back. I have my dogs to stare at me lovingly and to playfully fight each other for the spot on the sofa or bed next to me. That's appreciation.
Dogs are the best medicine. And they get us through the doldrums of winter to the spring sun that even they are excited about.
