Don't Count Your Chickens (or Pups) Before They're Hatched
Well, disappointment again. No puppies. You might wonder why we could make such an 'obvious mistake'. But it's really not so obvious.
When a female dog, who is descended from wolves and retains some of their traits, goes into heat, she will often begin to show first signs of pregnancy.
That's why vets can tell around the 21st day if there's a pregnancy, but often not before or after that date until it is obvious.
Wolves lived together and when one female became pregnant the other females would display the same signs. That way, if the litter were large or if the mother did not survive, these surrogate moms could care for and actually produce milk for the babies.
So our wonderful Virginia, the best mom ever, is not having pups. We are still hoping for success in the summer.
After all, Charlie Joe has a job description which he is not following!
