Dogs
are smart. You know that. Dogs are very observant. You know that too.
It's the combination of intelligence and paying attention to detail
that can paint an owner into a corner when it comes to your dog's
behavior. Your dog knows your habits better than you do. You might give
away that you are going outside or in the car simply by picking up keys
or checking yourself in the mirror. Your dog reacts. He wants to be
part of whatever it is you are planning to do.
For example, all of my dogs may look fast asleep in the different spots they've allocated as theirs. I forgot something in the car so I get my shoes and put them on. Whoa! All of the dogs wake up immediately and start to go absolutely crazy and irrational. All I did was put on shoes. But they have learned that I always put on shoes before I go outside and they love to go outside. They run back and forth, one of them barks, and another one actually sits in front of the door and blocks the exit. Getting outside without them is horrendous.
How to solve this problem or a similar one you might have? Change your routine. Now I keep a pair of shoes in the bathroom. When I plan to go out and can't take them along, I put on my shoes in the bathroom. Their crazy actions don't happen. They don't bark or block the door. In the time it takes them to realize I have gone outside without them, I am back.
Change your routine and reduce your dog's anxiety and over-stimulation. It's that simple.
