To ensure success when you have your dog out for an afternoon of fun and freedom, set yourself and your dog up for success.
Whether it's a dog park or a state park, warm up yourself and your dog
using the leash. Keep your dog on leash to ensure that he is being
receptive to your commands and paying attention to you first and his
environment second. On-leash time will help calm your dog if he is
excited about the trip.
When you arrive at your destination, if you just open the car door and
watch your dog run, you are setting up your time together to be
frustrating with a greater chance that your dog will not obey your
commands and may even play "keep away" when you call him.
By taking some time on-leash to settle your dog and acclimate him to
his surroundings, you can then release him as a reward for his great
behavior during your walk together.
