English Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers are some of the most lovable, intelligent, and
loyal dogs in the realm of dog breeds. Though originally bred as
hunting and sporting dogs, Golden Retrievers are now common family dogs
due to their gentle disposition and ease of training. However, most
people don't seem to know that the dog so commonly seen in America and
in Golden Retriever movies has a European counterpart. English Golden Retrievers
are very similar to their American counterparts, with slight
differences in appearance and breeding resulting in the distinction.
Perhaps
the most noticeable trait of English Golden Retrievers is their color.
Instead of the gold colors that merge into red, English Goldens are
much more strictly true shades of gold and, uniquely, a cream (or
'creme') color. From a distance, these cream-colored dogs look almost
pure white, but tinges of a champagne color can be seen upon closer
look. Some consider American Goldens to have a lankier build, though
this would conflict with other data that states, on average, English
Golden Retrievers tend to be slightly shorter American Golden
Retrievers. The slight decrease in stature may give the European
variety a stouter appearance, however.
Otherwise, British Golden
Retrievers are the same dog Americans know and love. They are built for
a rugged outdoor life, with plenty of fur to withstand chilly winters
and cold water. Like many retrievers, they are experts at hunting water
fowl.
