Nonshedding Dog Breeds
Many potential pet owners would love to own a dog. However, the
preponderance of dog fur in the home due to shedding can be a hassle
for some. People who find shedding to be annoying or undesirable should
avoid heavy shedding dogs, like English Golden Retrievers or German Shepherds. Nonshedding dog breeds are recommend for potential dog owners who have allergies or any other aversion to dog fur.
The best known of the nonshedding dog breeds is inarguably the Poodle.
Like the majority of dogs that don't shed, Poodles only have a single
coat of fur, rather than the two that most shedding dogs have. Keep in
mind, however, that poodles and other nonshedding dogs do still shed a
small amount of fur from time to time, but, overall, it occurs far less
than most breeds. Though standard, miniature and toy Poodles all share
this attractive trait, they still require grooming to keep their fur
from matting or becoming overly tangled. For owners with allergies, a
bath is also advisable once a month to further reduce allergens and
wash away any dead skin present on the dog's body.
Though most
nonshedding dog breeds are of the smaller variety, at least two larger
dog breeds do not shed or are light shedders: the Basenji and the Greyhound.
Basenjis are a dog native to Africa that are actually a medium height
(slightly larger than most terriers). Their coats are uniquely clean
and smooth, making them ideal dogs for people with allergies. They are
also unique in that they cannot bark, though they do make other noises.
Regardless, they are a good dog for households that want a quieter, if
active, dog. Greyhounds do shed occasionally, but, due to a lack of an
undercoat, it is relatively minor. Surprisingly, despite their ability
to sprint at incredibly fast speeds, Greyhounds are a very sedate dog
normally and often have no problem living in smaller spaces, like an
apartment.
Besides the aforementioned dogs, there are many
wire-haired terrier varieties of nonshedding dog breeds that satisfy
the needs of families in search of a hypoallergenic dog. If you would
